Nair Dental College Saves Millions with Rooftop Solar Power

16 0

Nair Hospital Dental College, a prominent government hospital under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai, has successfully deployed a 100 kW capacity rooftop solar system, demonstrating a significant commitment to sustainable energy.

The hospital, which operates both a college and a healthcare facility, was previously facing a monthly power bill of up to ₹1.5 million. The newly installed solar systems are projected to save the institution approximately ₹1.2 million to ₹1.3 million annually.

Innovative design maximizes space and savings:

The rooftop solar solution, installed by Gujarat-based Imagine Powertree, is distributed across two buildings—50 kW on the older structure and 50 kW on the newer one. A key feature of the installation is the use of solar gazebos.

The elevated structures serve a dual purpose: generating solar energy while allowing the rooftop space beneath them to be used for other functions. The hospital plans to utilize this shaded space for a new canteen. The structures, with vertical clearances of 3.5 m to 4.2 m, were specifically engineered with a thick, 120-micron coating to withstand Mumbai’s corrosive coastal air and designed to handle wind speeds up to 180 km/h.

Technology and impact:

The project utilizes high-efficiency Loom Solar’s bifacial TOPCon modules, offering 22% efficiency, coupled with Polycab inverters. The entire 100 kW setup is expected to generate an average of 82,500 units of electricity per year, translating.
To 360-380 units generated per day. This adoption is set to reduce the hospital’s dependence on the conventional grid by up to 10%.

The initiative was primarily driven by the desire to curb high power expenses and pass the resulting financial savings directly on to patients.

While the hospital has not yet included Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), the installer has recommended future adoption to further reduce reliance on diesel power generators. The success of this project serves as a powerful case study for other healthcare facilities considering the switch to commercial and industrial (C&I) rooftop solar solutions.
