Samsung Wins World’s Largest Carbon Capture Project

QatarEnergy has selected Samsung C&T Corporation, awarding the company the EPC contract for a large-scale carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project. The project will target existing liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities located within Ras Laffan Industrial City.

The new endeavor will rank among the world’s largest CCS initiatives. It is designed to capture and store 4.1 million tons of CO2 annually. The initiative also places Qatar at the global forefront of large-scale carbon capture deployment.

Focus on sustainability goals:

His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, called the project a milestone that builds upon Qatar’s growing CCS capabilities. He asserted that all of the country’s LNG expansion projects will deploy CCS technologies.

The project will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support Qatar’s National Climate Change Action Plan.

The project further reinforces Qatar’s position as a reliable supplier of affordable, lower-carbon energy.

It must be noted that Qatar’s long-term goal is to capture over 11 MTPA of CO2 by 2035.

Backdrop:

QatarEnergy launched its first operational CCS project back in 2019, which currently has a capacity of 2.2 MTPA. The company is also moving forward with two other ongoing CCS projects. These projects serve the North Field East and North Field South expansion efforts. Once complete, they will capture an additional 3.3 MTPA of CO2 combined. This new flagship project represents a massive step forward in achieving Qatar’s ambitious carbon capture goals.
