The Ministry for New and Renewable Energy, or MNRE, has launched the Green Hydrogen Certification scheme.

The green hydrogen certification scheme is India’s first certification framework to confirm hydrogen production exclusively using renewable energy, ensuring its green labeling.

The green hydrogen thrust:

Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, who launched the scheme, said that it is a crucial step towards establishing a robust framework for green hydrogen production certification, ensuring transparency, traceability, and market credibility.

He was speaking at the one-day national workshop on opportunities for the MSMEs in the green hydrogen supply chain.

During the inaugural address, he highlighted India’s commitment to innovation-led growth, emphasizing MSMEs’ role in India’s energy transition and building a self-reliant green hydrogen ecosystem by 2030.

Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, MNRE, emphasized the importance of empowering MSMEs to participate in the green hydrogen industry, emphasizing the need for capacity building, finance facilitation, and technology linkages.

Technical sessions:

Panelists discussed R&D collaboration models, indigenization of components like bipolar plates and electrolyzers, and the role of knowledge institutions in technology collaboration for MSMEs.

Experts discussed the integration of MSMEs into large-scale projects, highlighting business models and market opportunities and advocating for systematic engagement strategies in the green hydrogen supply chain.

The speakers discussed the use of biomass for decentralized hydrogen production, highlighting its potential in rural industries and its role in promoting circular economy principles.

Financial institutions like the World Bank, IREDA, KfW, and IIFCL discussed de-risking strategies, blended finance mechanisms, and designing green credit lines for MSMEs.

The workshop aimed to mainstream MSMEs in India’s clean energy transition, focusing on building an inclusive, technology-driven, and decentralized green hydrogen economy. Participants highlighted the need for standardized protocols, shared innovation platforms, and Green Hydrogen Clusters. India’s potential as a manufacturing hub for green hydrogen technologies was also highlighted.

India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to:

• Make India a global green hydrogen production, usage, and export hub.
• Develop a green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT per annum.
• Add about 125 GW of renewable energy capacity.
• Invest over Rs. eight lakh crore.
• Create over six lakh jobs.
• Reduce fossil fuel imports by over Rs. one lakh crore.
