Container Corporation of India Ltd., or Concor, the logistics arm of Indian Railways, is developing its first net-zero ambient warehouse in Sriperumbudur.

The 130,000 sq ft facility is being established to cater to its customer base in the region.

G. Gayatri, Area Head – III, Concor, speaking during a session on the State Logistics Policy jointly organized by The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, said that the 50-acre facility will be constructed with an investment exceeding Rs 60 crore, with the initial 20-acre phase expected to be operational within a year.

She said that the decision to build the net-zero warehouse was a result of an assessment of interest based on expressions of interest submitted by various parties.

Concor is expanding its warehousing facility with 1 lakh sq ft of ambient and 30,000 sq ft of cold storage, demonstrating its commitment to providing sustainable logistics solutions.

It must be noted that Concor and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) last month signed an MoU to establish the “CONCOR-TERI Center of Excellence for Green and Sustainable Logistics.

The initiative aims to drive research and policy innovations for sustainable logistics in rail transport, warehousing, and terminal operations.

The center will focus on developing environmentally responsible freight transportation strategies, implementing innovative technologies to reduce carbon footprint, creating tools for green warehousing and storage infrastructure, exploring commercialization opportunities, and fostering industry awareness on sustainable logistics.

During the launch, Sanjay Swarup, CMD, CONCOR, highlighted the company’s ESG-focused initiatives, including 130 LNG trailers for first-mile/last-mile service and 95% cargo movement through rail. He spoke about the corporation’s plans to use electric vehicles, build a 130,000 sq. ft. net-zero warehouse in Sriperumbudur, and use solar panels at its terminals for green, sustainable, and environmentally responsible logistics.
Mr. Sanjay Seth, Sr. Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, of TERI, said that the CoE will transform its warehouses into green infrastructure, contribute to India’s National Logistics Policy, and drive sustainable logistics research.
