President Droupadi Murmu has called for a nationwide movement towards energy conservation and efficiency, emphasizing its critical role in reducing carbon emissions and securing a sustainable future for India.

Speaking at the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025 ceremony, the president described energy conservation as “not just an option but the most crucial need of today” and the most environmentally friendly source of energy.

Behavioral change is essential:

President Murmu stressed that achieving national energy goals hinges on a significant shift in public behavior across all sectors.

She said that saving energy doesn’t simply mean using less but rather utilizing energy wisely, responsibly, and efficiently.

Practical steps highlighted included adopting energy-efficient devices, utilizing natural light and ventilation, and avoiding the unnecessary use of electrical appliances.

She noted that these actions, along with embracing solar and renewable energy options, directly lead to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions.

Ecosystem and future generations:

The President underscored that the benefits of energy conservation extend beyond climate goals, playing a vital role in maintaining clean air, safe water sources, and a balanced ecosystem.

She said that the effort is a moral duty, stating that every unit of energy saved is a “symbol of our responsibility towards nature and our sensitivity towards future generations.”

India’s progress and policy push:

Acknowledging the government’s efforts, the president noted that India’s energy efficiency initiatives in 2023-24 resulted in energy savings of 53.60 million tons of oil equivalent, which translated into significant economic savings and a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions.

She lauded key schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the National Green Hydrogen Mission for helping reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Collective responsibility:

In her concluding remarks, President Murmu made a strong appeal for collective action. She emphasized that the success of India’s energy transition requires the participation of every sector and every citizen.

She also highlighted the importance of increasing awareness among the youth and children, calling them the key to ensuring the country’s sustainable development goals are met.
