Varaha has announced a major global achievement.
The company completed Asia’s first-ever, registry-backed enhanced rock weathering (ERW) carbon credit issuance. This
is only the third registry-backed ERW issuance globally. The two preceding companies in the segment are InPlanet and UNDO.
Pioneering dual carbon pathways:
This milestone places Varaha at the global forefront of climate innovation. It is now the world’s first company to issue verified carbon credits from two distinct carbon removal (CDR) pathways. Varaha previously issued registry-backed credits from industrial biochar.
The ERW project in Madhya Pradesh:
The pioneering ERW project operates in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh. It works with smallholder farmers who grow cotton. Farmers apply finely ground basalt rock powder to their fields. This rock powder is a byproduct of stone crushing.
Benefits and verification:
The basalt powder permanently removes atmospheric CO2. It also delivers significant co-benefits. It enhances soil fertility and improves crop productivity for the farmers. The issuance is certified under the Puro.earth Standard. This confirms the high-integrity and science-backed nature of Varaha’s carbon removals.
It must be noted that the effort is inclusive, rooted in India, and led by innovation. It is powered by the participation of smallholder farmers.
