Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys and architect of India’s Aadhaar system, is poised to head a high-level task force aimed at transforming the nation’s power sector.
According to media reports, Nilekani will spearhead reforms focused on digitizing and decentralizing India’s energy landscape.
The move comes as India looks to usher in a new era of energy management, with Nilekani himself previously articulating a vision for a “Digital Energy Grid.”
He has often likened this potential transformation to the revolutionary impact of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) on the financial sector, where every home could become an “energy producer, seller, and buyer” through widespread adoption of rooftop solar and electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
This initiative is expected to leverage digital public infrastructure to streamline operations, reduce costs, and enhance efficiency across the generation, transmission, and distribution segments of the power sector.
If confirmed, this would mark Nilekani’s second major government assignment in driving large-scale digital transformation, following his pivotal role in the Aadhaar project.
The appointment signals a strong commitment from the government to harness technology for a more resilient and sustainable energy future for India.
