In a significant move toward environmental stewardship and improved efficiency, the Department of Posts (DoP) and the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainable packaging solutions for India’s postal network.
The collaboration leverages IIP’s 58 years of packaging expertise with DoP’s vast network of over 1.65 lakh post offices, cementing a robust framework for green innovation in parcel services. The agreement was officially signed in Mumbai by Dr. Sudhir Jakhere, Assistant Post Master General, India Posts, and Dr. Babu Rao Guduri, Joint Director, and Associate Professor, IIP.
Focus:
The core of the partnership is dedicated to replacing conventional materials with sustainable packaging options.
The IIP will focus on developing eco-friendly, cost-efficient, and durable alternatives to current packaging like corrugated boxes and cloth wraps. This includes creating specialized, airworthy packaging for liquids and developing materials that are lightweight, shockproof, customizable, and scalable for nationwide implementation.
Global benchmarking and cost strategy:,
A key aspect of the collaboration is the effort to elevate DoP’s practices to meet international standards. IIP will assess current procedures against global benchmarks and analyze the logistics industry’s best practices.
Furthermore, the partnership will develop a comprehensive pricing strategy, benchmarking the costs of sustainable materials against traditional options while outlining quality control processes and technical standards for design and size.
The MoU also includes creating video training materials and graphics to educate staff on the new sustainable practices, ensuring a smooth transition across the entire postal network.
This strategic agreement is poised to enhance the safety and security of postal services while firmly supporting the Government’s vision for environmental sustainability.
