In a decisive push to cement India’s role as the world’s premier energy powerhouse, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today opened India Energy Week 2026 with a bold invitation to the global community. Speaking to a gathering of international ministers and industry titans, the Prime Minister framed India not just as a consumer, but as a strategic architect of the global energy future, bridging the gap between traditional fuel security and a green hydrogen-led tomorrow.

The PM reiterated that India is moving from energy security to energy independence. He said that the country has significant opportunities in exploration, refining, sand developing and energy infrastructure.

A global platform for action:

In his virtual address, Prime Minister Modi underscored that India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 has rapidly evolved into more than just a forum for dialogue. He described it as a global platform for action where international collaboration meets local policy. The Prime Minister revealed that recommendations from previous IEW editions are now actively being integrated into national energy frameworks, ensuring that global expertise directly shapes India’s regulatory environment.

Andaman & Nicobar: the next hydrogen hub

A standout feature of the address was the strategic designation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as India’s newest green hydrogen hub. By transforming these islands into a center for clean fuel innovation, the government aims to create a scalable template for decarbonization. This initiative aligns with India’s broader goal of achieving energy independence while providing the world with sustainable alternatives to traditional hydrocarbons.

India’s role as a reliable exporter:

Highlighting India’s economic capacity, the Prime Minister noted that the country is currently among the top five global exporters of petroleum products, with a footprint spanning 150 countries. As the world’s fastest-growing major economy, India’s rising demand presents a unique equitable opportunity for investors.

“Today, for the energy sector, India offers the largest opportunity,” the Prime Minister stated, urging global stakeholders to explore the vast potential within the Indian energy value chain.
