The All India Power Engineers Federation, or AIPEF, has submitted a memorandum to the power ministry requesting the withdrawal of the privatization process of electricity distribution companies in Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh.
AIPEF has urged the Minister of State for the Power Ministry to withdraw unilateral privatization in UP and review Chandigarh Power Department privatization.
Shailendra Dubey, chairman of AIPEF, stated that most states have achieved viability in the public sector itself. The goal is to prevent privatization in the greater interest of consumers and employees, he said.
The average of aggregate technical and commercial losses has significantly decreased over the past two to three years, he said.
Protests are underway against the government’s plan to privatize UP’s discoms Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. (PVVNL) and Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. (DVVNL), Mr. Dubey said.
