ABB India has announced a major strategic investment exceeding ₹140 crore to expand and modernize its low voltage (LV) motors manufacturing capacity, coinciding with the launch of India’s first locally manufactured ultra-premium efficiency IE5 motor range.

The twin announcements reinforce India’s growing role as a crucial hub for global innovation and technological excellence in industrial efficiency.

Strategic investment and manufacturing hub:

The committed investment will upgrade and expand ABB’s existing LV motors facility. According to Stefan Floeck, President – IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB, the move is more than just a capacity increase.

“Our strategic investment is not just about building capacity—it’s about reinforcing our long-term vision for India as a key global manufacturing hub,” said Floeck. He added, “With rising demand for energy-efficient motors, we’re engineering solutions that help customers outrun leaner and cleaner.”

Rare earth-free IE5 technology for decarbonization:

The newly launched IE5 motors are built on proven induction technology, a critical distinction as they achieve ultra-premium efficiency without relying on rare earth metals. This makes them a highly sustainable and reliable solution for industrial decarbonization.

The motors offer up to 40% lower energy losses compared to the commonly used IE3 motors, promising customers a faster Return on Investment (ROI), reduced total cost of ownership, and a longer operating life.

Sanjeev Arora, President, Motion Business & IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB India, highlighted the dual benefits of the new technology.

“These motors combine the reliability of proven induction technology with ultra-premium efficiency – without relying on rare-earth metals. This milestone reflects our commitment to supporting Indian industries with sustainable, high-performance solutions that are built for local conditions and aligned with the nation’s push toward industrial decarbonization.”

The IE5 range, with power ratings from 45 kW to 1000 kW, is custom-engineered for local operating conditions and is ideal for major industrial sectors, including metals, cement, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food & beverage.
