The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), hosted the 2nd edition of the Green Mumbai Summit 2025.
The summit focused on “Advancing Climate Resilience: Decarbonizing the Built Environment,” bringing together leaders to chart a roadmap for a sustainable, low-carbon Mumbai by 2070.
The event saw strong collaboration between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), who pledged coordinated action on green infrastructure, renewable energy, and sustainable waste management.
Vision for sustainable urban planning:
Avinash Kate, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, BMC, highlighted the city’s commitment to sustainability. In his address, he said, “At BMC, our vision for greening Mumbai is rooted in making sustainable urban planning a reality. We recognize that buildings and real estate contribute significantly to emissions, and transforming the new buildings while retrofitting the existing buildings is key to achieving our net zero goals.”
The BMC’s G/South Ward Office was recognized with an IGBC Gold Certification for its sustainable efforts, which include saving 48% of potable water, treating all wastewater with an on-site sewage treatment plant, and installing a solar PV system that meets over 11% of its annual energy needs.
Green redevelopment and net-zero communities:
Panel discussions focused on critical urban sustainability issues, including green redevelopment and the emergence of net-zero communities. Experts explored strategies for revitalizing aging infrastructure with eco-friendly housing models and resilient waste systems, while showcasing pioneering projects that use smart technologies and circular economy principles to build carbon-neutral neighborhoods.
Accelerating green building adoption:
Dr. Mala Singh, Chairperson, IGBC Mumbai Chapter, underscored the importance of green buildings in India’s urban transformation. “India is witnessing a transformative shift towards sustainable urbanization, and green buildings are at the heart of this journey,” she said. “Through the Green Mumbai Summit 2025, we are reinforcing our commitment to accelerate the adoption of green building practices, integrate renewable energy solutions, and enable cities like Mumbai to lead the way in achieving India’s Net Zero goals.”
The summit also honored 12 projects with IGBC Platinum Certification, recognizing their achievements in energy efficiency and carbon reduction. Additionally, 70 founding members from Mumbai were acknowledged for their commitment to the green and net-zero building movement.
Chitranjan Kaushik, co-chair of the IGBC Mumbai Chapter, concluded the summit by calling it a “milestone in fostering partnerships and innovation to accelerate Mumbai’s journey toward becoming a global exemplar of climate-resilient, sustainable urban living.”
