Lenovo Unveils DaaS for Sustainability

Lenovo has launched device-as-a-service, or DaaS, for sustainability to reduce carbon, cut costs, and boost ROI, while also modernizing their IT infrastructure.

The as-a-service provides organizations with new tools to actively reduce their carbon footprint, extend the life of their devices, and accelerate the transition to a circular economy, Lenovo said in a press release.

The new service is an addition to the company’s TruScale DaaS platform, which currently manages millions of devices globally. This subscription-based model unifies devices, services, and financing, eliminating the need for upfront capital investment and complex procurement processes.

Key features of the DaaS:

Carbon Impact Portal: Provides real-time, device-level insights to assist with environmental, social, and governance
(ESG) reporting.

Certified Refurbished Devices: Offers a cost-effective option for device refreshes, which also helps to reduce an organization’s carbon footprint.

CO₂ Offset Services: Integrates verified climate action to compensate for lifecycle emissions.

Asset Recovery Services: Facilitates secure decommissioning and value recovery for retired assets.

By offering these options, Lenovo is directly addressing research from McKinsey that suggests up to 60% of end-user device emissions can be reduced through strategies like extending device lifespans and sourcing fewer devices per user.

TCO-ROI:

The solution is also backed by strong data on cost benefits, with DaaS adopters reporting an average 20% reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO) and maintenance savings ranging from 10% to 40%.

According to Lenovo, some deployments have resulted in up to a 35% reduction in device-related IT costs. This dual benefit of financial savings and environmental responsibility aligns with recent industry research, which indicates that 62% of organizations invest in sustainability for the associated cost savings.

Coventry University Group serves as a prime example of the solution’s impact. The university replaced its aging IT estate with Lenovo TruScale DaaS, offsetting 223 tons of CO₂ through the included CO₂ Offset Services. The shift also saved 40 hours per week in IT labor and enhanced support for its global faculty network.

“Lenovo TruScale gives us the scalability and flexibility we need to manage our technology estate efficiently and meet our carbon reduction goals,” said Ian Dunn, Provost, Coventry University Group.

“It’s taken pressure off our internal teams, allowing us to focus more on delivering outstanding student experiences.”

Leadership thoughts:

“Enterprises are rethinking how they manage IT—not just for performance, but for purpose,” said John Stamer, Vice President and General Manager, Global Product Services, Lenovo. “TruScale DaaS for Sustainability reflects our vision for the future of IT: circular by default, intelligent by design, and accountable by outcome. It’s a smarter, more resilient way to deliver value across the enterprise.”

“Sustainable IT should drive value, not complexity,” said Rakshit Ghura, Vice President and General Manager, Digital Workplace Solutions at Lenovo. “CIOs are increasingly tasked with delivering business performance and sustainability progress in parallel. Lenovo TruScale DaaS for Sustainability meets this demand with data-driven, circular IT that helps simplify decision-making and unlock ROI from day one.”

Backdrop:

The launch of Lenovo’s TruScale DaaS for Sustainability comes at a time when global enterprises are under increasing pressure to demonstrate measurable progress on their ESG commitments. Regulatory bodies, investors, and consumers are all demanding greater transparency and action on climate change and sustainable business practices. For many organizations, the IT department represents a significant opportunity for improvement. Device lifecycles—from manufacturing and usage to disposal—contribute heavily to an organization’s carbon footprint and e-waste.

Traditional IT procurement models, which involve large upfront capital expenditures and a “take-make-dispose” approach, are becoming less viable. The shift towards a circular economy, which focuses on extending product life, reducing waste, and recovering materials, is gaining momentum. As such, solutions that integrate sustainability into the core of IT management are becoming highly sought after. Lenovo’s new DaaS offering is a direct response to this market need, providing a comprehensive, flexible, and financially sound pathway for businesses to transition to a more sustainable and efficient IT model. It reflects a growing industry trend where technology solutions are not only judged on performance and cost but also on their societal and environmental impact.
