Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for stronger global support on climate action during the G7 summit in Italy. He urged developed nations to fulfill their promises on climate finance and technology transfer.
He urged developed nations to deliver on their financial commitments. Technology transfer is also crucial, he stated.
Modi emphasized the global threat posed by climate change. He noted that the Global South should not bear a disproportionate burden. “India is taking action. We expect reciprocal commitment,” he asserted.
India has pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2070. It has already cut its emissions intensity and increased renewable energy capacity. But Modi stressed that developing countries need access to affordable finance to stay on track.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the $100 billion annual climate fund, first promised by developed countries in 2009. “We still await full delivery,” he said.
The G7 leaders discussed ways to accelerate global climate efforts. They agreed that warming must be limited to 1.5°C. But differences remain over who pays and how fast nations should act.
Modi reminded the summit that climate justice must guide global action. He said India stands ready to lead, but fairness and trust are essential for progress.
