The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has intensified its crackdown on industrial pollution, ordering 10 ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants to cease operations immediately due to severe violations of environmental norms.

The move follows a series of inspections by flying squads constituted under the directions of the Bombay High Court to address deteriorating air quality in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The crackdown:

The crackdown is part of a high-stakes environmental push by the MPCB to salvage Mumbai’s deteriorating air quality.

The drive resulted in:

• 10 Immediate Closures: For units found in gross violation of the October 2025 air pollution guidelines.
• ₹84 Lakh Penalties: Recovered from 17 other plants as bank guarantees to ensure future compliance.
• 17 Show-Cause Notices: Issued to units with moderate deficiencies.
• Four others received interim directions to upgrade their infrastructure within a strict timeframe.

The closure list:

The following ten entities were served with formal closure directions under Section 31A of the Air Act. This includes failure to install mandated dust-suppression systems, such as 50-meter mist foggers and automated tire-washing bays:

• Swaminarayan Lifespaces LLP (Dombivli)
• JRB Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (Kalyan)
• Shriram Enterprises (Tembghar) Ambernath
• Prism Johnson Ltd. and L&T—Larsen & Toubro (Bhiwandi)
• Krishna Constructions (Dahisar Mori)
• Prakash Engineers and Infra Projects, and AP Constructions (Turbhe)
• Gajanan Saidatta Associates, (Virar)
• RDS Project (Worli)

M. Devender Singh, Member Secretary, MPCB, confirmed the drive. He said, “The board is conducting daily reviews of air pollution control measures, and the enforcement drive will continue on a sustained basis. Strict action will be initiated wherever non-compliance is observed to protect the region’s air quality.”

The MPCB has inspected 240 RMC plants, collecting cumulative penalties of ₹4.35 crore. The board has deployed 22 mobile air quality monitoring vans and is utilizing 32 continuous monitoring stations to identify pollution hotspots in real time.
