The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited, or IREDA, has commissioned a 25,000 liter per day (25 KLD) sewage treatment plant, or STP, at the India International Centre (IIC) Annexe in New Delhi.
The facility is designed to modernize the IIC’s operations by treating sewage from toilets, bathrooms, and kitchens. It will recycle wastewater for horticulture and industrial use, which is expected to reduce foul discharge and ensure greener operations.
A unique feature of the plant is its ability to generate electricity from the sludge produced by the biodegradable waste.
The project was funded under IREDA’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, aiming to contribute to sustainable urban infrastructure.
The STP was officially inaugurated by Dr. Bijay Kumar Mohanty, Director (Finance), IREDA, and Shyam Saran, President of IIC and former Foreign Secretary of India.
Dr. Mohanty said, “Sustainable practices such as these are vital for achieving India’s climate goals.” He praised the IIC for its initiative in reutilizing sewage waste for green energy.
In a separate message, Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), IREDA, said, “IREDA’s CSR interventions are focused on impactful projects like this STP, which integrate community welfare with green innovation.” He added that such initiatives “not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also set benchmarks for others to follow.”
