Sony Group Corporation has unveiled its ambitious new environmental plan, “Green Management 2030” (GM2030), which sets aggressive targets for emissions reduction throughout its value chain. This initiative also accelerates the company’s timeline for achieving a zero environmental footprint.
The new goals include a commitment to become net-zero across its entire value chain by fiscal year 2040, a full decade earlier than its previous target.
The GM2030 plan, which covers the period from 2026 to 2030, is the latest step in Sony’s long-term “Road to Zero” strategy. A cornerstone of the new plan is a target to cut direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) from its operations by 60% and indirect supply chain emissions (Scope 3) by 25% from 2025 levels. The company also aims to power all of its global operations with 100% renewable electricity and is actively encouraging its suppliers to adopt similar practices.
The new targets build on Sony’s success in meeting and surpassing its prior climate goals. According to its 2025 Sustainability Report, the company has already exceeded its 2025 targets for reducing absolute GHG emissions and increasing its renewable electricity rate, demonstrating significant progress toward its environmental objectives.
Beyond emissions, the GM2030 plan places a strong emphasis on circular resource use. Key initiatives include increasing the use of recycled content in its products, improving overall recyclability, and limiting non-recyclable plastics to no more than 30% of a product’s weight. The company also plans to completely phase out plastic packaging for its smaller products and eliminate it from all of its retail stores.
In addition to its internal commitments, Sony has joined the RE100 initiative, which promotes 100% renewable energy use. The company’s net-zero targets have also received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative, underscoring its alignment with internationally recognized climate action standards.
