L&T Energy Green Tech has bagged a project to construct a 10,000 tons per annum green hydrogen plant at IOCL’s Panipat refinery

The company will supply green hydrogen to the refinery at ₹397 per kg for 25 years.

L&T’s Green Hydrogen Solution will integrate renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, use a modular design for future expansion, utilize advanced electrolyzer technology for efficient production, and prioritize safety and sustainability throughout its lifecycle.

Hydrogen is utilized in refineries for desulfurization and hydrocracking, removing sulfur from crude oil for cleaner fuels like diesel and breaking down larger hydrocarbon molecules for gasoline production.

The successful tender in India demonstrates the viability of green hydrogen projects, potentially attracting investments. These projects drive technological advancements, create green jobs, reduce India’s carbon footprint, and promote energy independence by reducing its reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The company outbid NTPC Renewable Energy and Renew E Fuels for the project, based on a build, own, operate model.

India’s largest oil refining company, IOCL, has launched a green hydrogen tender to diversify its energy portfolio and contribute to the country’s net-zero emissions target, aligning with the Indian government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Green hydrogen production significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to a cleaner energy transition, reducing refineries’ carbon footprint.
