Simple Energy, an electric two-wheeler manufacturer, has begun commercial production of India’s first rare earth-free EV motors at its plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
This initiative marks a significant step for the country, as it provides a domestic alternative to supply chains that are heavily dependent on imported rare earth elements.
The company, which is also preparing for an IPO, believes this move is vital for India’s self-reliance in the electric mobility space.
Simple Energy’s decision to develop this technology was spurred by global supply chain disruptions, particularly China’s export restrictions on rare earth minerals.
According to CEO Suhas Rajkumar, the future of electric mobility must be built on self-reliance, with a “Make in India” approach being an imperative. The new motors utilize a patented, proprietary in-house technology that replaces heavy rare earth magnets without compromising on performance or torque. This innovation demonstrates that sustainable technology can compete with traditional methods while reducing strategic risks for the Indian auto industry.
By industrializing this cutting-edge research, Simple Energy is directly contributing to the government’s agenda on localization and building resilient supply chains. The development not only minimizes vulnerabilities but also positions India to become a global player in innovation-led clean mobility.
